Heron Island Resort - Location

Located off the coast of Queensland approximately 80km northeast of Gladstone and 460km north-north-west of Brisbane, Heron Island is a coral cay situated near the Tropic of Capricorn. Situated in one of the world’s most incredible marine parks, Heron Island is in close proximity to the World Heritage listed natural wonder that is the Great Barrier Reef.

Situated on the western or leeward side of Heron Reef, Heron Island and its fringing platform reef play significant roles in the biodiversity of the environment. The waters around the island support 900 out of the 1,500 fish species that can be found on the Great Barrier Reef as well as 72% of all coral species found on the reef.

Heron Island measures approximately 800m long and is 300m at its widest point, covering approximately 16 hectares of area. Located near the western tip of the island, the island’s highest point measures 3.6m above sea level. Along the southern shore of the island is a dune ridge which measures 3m above sea level while lower dunes on the north-eastern side of the island only measure roughly 1m above sea level.
